Jan. 31, 2013 Public Workshop on a Plan for downtown Essex Centre

Share your vision of downtown Essex Centre

Residents and business owners in the Town of Essex are encouraged to participate in the development of a conceptual plan for downtown Essex Centre.

A public workshop will be held Thursday, January 31 to seek input for the preparation of a detailed streetscape plan for Talbot Street from Maidstone to Fairview, and for the first blocks of the intersecting streets at Centre, Wilson and Fox. A land use master plan and conceptual design plan will also be developed for the Silo District.

What is your vision for downtown Essex Centre? How could we improve our commercial streetscape? Do you have ideas for the development of the Silo District now that the railroad tracks are gone? These are some of the questions that will be asked.

The town has retained a consulting team from Stempski Kelly Associates Inc., landscape architects, to facilitate the workshop and to develop the conceptual plans. At the workshop, a discussion of streetscape design principles will be followed by public discussion and active participation in the development of a conceptual plan.

“Public input from all stakeholders is very important to this process,” says Town Policy Planner Jeff Watson. “In partnership with the Essex Centre BIA we have purchased new benches and planters, but we want to go further. We want to set goals and establish strategies that will help us to achieve a vibrant downtown and a prosperous future for the Town of Essex.”

The workshop will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Superior Room at the Essex Community Centre, 25 Gosfield Townline West, Essex (next to the public library). Everyone is welcome to attend.
