Make December 2012 Fire Safe!

Windsor Fire & Rescue Asks the Community to Practice
the 12 Days of Holiday Fire Safety
Help make the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Wish Come True for the Most Fire-Safe December Ever.

The Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council has launched its second annual 12 Days of Holiday Fire Safety Campaign to help prevent fire and carbon monoxide tragedies at a time when people tend to let their guard down.

“Our team of investigators knows all too well the deadly consequences of fire safety fundamentals left unattended,” says Ted Wieclawek, Ontario Fire Marshal and Chair of the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council.   “Our 12 Days of Holiday Fire Safety campaign focuses on the 12 tips that we know can have the biggest impact on reducing devastating fires and carbon monoxide exposures,” Wieclawek adds.

The Fire Marshal has called on fire departments and communities across Ontario to help make his wish come true for “the most fire-safe December on record”.   The Council’s goal is to engage at least 100 fire departments, including Windsor Fire & Rescue, and their surrounding communities in the crusade to get the public to join in the program.

The 12 Days of Holiday Fire Safety serves up useful tips ranging from replacing smoke alarms over ten years old to keeping space heaters at least one metre away from anything that can burn.  The public are encouraged to pledge their support of the Fire Marshal’s Holiday Safety Wish, simply by being aware of the tips and putting the essential safeguards in place at home.

“Fire tragedies are in decline for 2012 in this province—25 fewer deaths so far this year—but the holiday season can bring distractions that lead to tragedy,” says Wieclawek.

The remarks are echoed by Windsor’s Fire Chief Bruce Montone.  “While fire can happen anywhere, at anytime, it most often strikes when people let their guard down—when individuals are distracted by the hustle and bustle of the holidays, by the telephone, by the kids or by the doorbell.  All it takes is for a pot to be left on the stove, or a candle to be left burning unattended, and a family’s holiday celebrations can turn to tragedy,” he says.

Homeowners and renters alike are urged to check their safety routine against these 12 Days of Holiday Fire Safety tips:

  1. Water fresh trees daily. Keep the base of the trunk in water at all times.
  2. Check all sets of lights before decorating. Discard any sets that are frayed or damaged.
  3. Make sure you have working smoke alarms. Remember, they wear out, so replace them every 10 years.
  4. Make sure you have working carbon monoxide alarms. Remember, they wear out, so replace them every 7-10 years.
  5. Make sure everyone knows how to get out safely if a fire occurs. Develop and practice a home fire escape plan.
  6. Use extension cords wisely. Extension cords should be used only as a temporary connection.
  7. Give space heaters space.  Keep them at least one metre away from anything that can burn.
  8. When you go out, blow out!  Remember to always blow out candles before leaving the room.
  9. Keep matches and lighters out of the sight and reach of children. Matches and lighters can be deadly in the hands of children.
  10. Watch what you heat! Always stay in the kitchen when cooking.
  11. Encourage smokers to smoke outside. Careless smoking is the leading cause of fatal fires.
  12. There's more to responsible drinking than taking a cab home.  Alcohol is all too often a common factor in many fatal fires.
Carol Heller, a fire safety expert with Kidde Canada, a partner to the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council says, “As another year draws to a close, we need to be mindful that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms do not last forever.  One of the most persistent issues we see is that homeowners continue to be unaware or forget that smoke alarms need replaced every 10 years, and carbon monoxide alarms, every 5 to 7 years, whether battery operated or hard-wired.”

"Smoke and CO alarm tampering is another issue that can escalate at this time of year due to all the new toys and electronics that run off batteries and the increased incidence of nuisance alarms as we cook and entertain more at this joyous time,” Heller adds.

For more background on the 12 tips or to pledge support for the most fire-safe December ever in Ontario, visit www.safeathome.ca/12days.

The Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council was established in 1993 to promote fire prevention and public education through partnerships with various groups and individuals with an interest in public safety. The Council also provides opportunities for members to participate in shaping the direction of fire safety strategies across the province by enabling them to have input on fire safety initiatives and share ideas, information and resources toward the common goal of improved fire safety.

Monty Python’s SPAMALOT at the Chrysler Theatre Nov. 9 to 18, 2012

Windsor Light Music Theatre Scores Big For 126th Show!

Broadway comes to Windsor once again, as WLMT is thrilled to present Monty Python’s SPAMALOT, the first production of its kind to appear in the Windsor/Detroit area.  Being the first to secure the rights to perform SPAMALOT is an exciting coup for the group and marks the 126th show produced by the Windsor Light Music Theatre.

Audiences all around the world have been roaring with laughter since Monty Python’s SPAMALOT won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2005. SPAMALOT tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and features a bevy of beautiful show girls, not to mention flying cows, killer rabbits and taunting French guards. The show features fantastic tunes which are catchier than the plague:  He Is Not Dead Yet; Knights of the Round Table;  Find Your Grail and of course, Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.

Eric Idle, a member of the Monty Python team, wrote the musical's book and lyrics and collaborated with John Du Prez on most of the music.

Formerly called The Windsor Light Opera Association, The Windsor Light Music Theatre was founded by Dr. John H. L. Watson in 1948, and the company has continued their long tradition of producing two musical productions every year since, without fail. Originally, the shows were performed on the Walkerville Collegiate stage, until they moved them to the Chrysler Theatre in 1960.

“WLMT has a long and rich history of providing Southwestern Ontario with what we believe is the best in Broadway-style live musical entertainment. It is a tremendous achievement for us to present SPAMALOT as our we approach our 65th anniversary,” states WLMT President Jack McGarry.

The show opens at the Chrysler Theatre on November 9 and runs through November 18. Performances are Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased directly by phoning the Windsor Light Box Office at (519) 974-6593, or www.windsorlight.com.

Nov.3: "The Many Faces of Women" - 5 Female Entrepreneurs Can Help You!

Women Empowering Women - Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves

9.30 am, Nov. 3, 2012 at Mackenzie Hall...tickets are $90 at the door.

When fellow executive directors turned innovative entrepreneurs, Mary Kaye Lucier and Bonnie Pacuta decided to join forces to change the world for Windsor women, little did they know their dream of an “edutainment” event providing inspiration to combat the “overwhelm” would take on a life of its own.

But sure enough, Mary Kaye, a local social worker in private practice specializing in body image, and Bonnie, a care manager counseling adults now the primary caregivers of their aging parents, were quickly joined in their quest to provide the right coping skills to help women survive, even thrive in all aspects of their stressful modern lives, “The Many Faces of Women”.
Soon EFT practitioner, Frances Soda had “tapped” her way into their plans. Certified yoga instructor Josie Burns came on board, and Patricia Julian was commissioned to cater lunch for the ladies, courtesy of her organic Sunflower Café on Drouillard Road.

Unlike many restaurants who pre-make meal components, Patricia treats you to the ultimate in “fresh”, creating your desired dish keeping in mind allergies or intolerances. The Sunflower emerged as a business when Patricia offered to prepare the organic, whole foods based meals nutritionists recommended after a cherished family member had been diagnosed with cancer. “…to have to think of each ingredient as potential wellness was something I had never considered before.” Thanks to Patricia’s passion for cooking, this event will not only celebrate Woman Power, but Food Power as well!
The event organizers were also joined by Windsor born, internationally acclaimed humorist, Zandra Bell. Zandra is the solution for corporate organizations looking to reduce workplace stress, increase staff productivity and thus improve their financial bottom line. The medically proven positive effects of laughter make humour in the corporate realm a powerful tool and it’s certainly one Zandra wields in an effective, economical way, creating hilarious, motivational presentations customized to her clients’ industry and objectives.

So aside from an opportunity to laugh to the point of incontinence, why is an event like this so important for women to attend?

Women are traditionally raised to be “people pleasers”, trained to look after everyone else’s needs first, says Mary Kaye. The pressure to be perfect, to live up to the unrealistic media ideal for body size can act as a catalyst for potentially fatal eating disorders. Women are literally either “starving away, or stuffing down feelings and needs gone unrecognized.”

When women dare to put their own needs first, Zandra posits “society labels them ‘selfish’ among other choice adjectives. Yet ironically the only way we can effectively be of service to others is to first claim our own power, take care of ourselves in a divinely selfish way. There’s a reason they tell you on the plane to secure your own oxygen mask first before helping others. ”

Families have traditionally cared for their aging members, Bonnie points out. The difference is, with people living longer, baby boomers, still supporting their own adult children, are now also long term caregivers for their elderly parents as well, a phenomenon known as the “sandwich generation”. As an experienced care manager Bonnie guides women in developing new coping skills to handle, not just the logistics of providing quality care to their elderly relatives, but also the emotional fallout it causes.

More women work outside the home as well, so when you add the increasing responsibilities of a career, it is no wonder women are feeling “stressed to the max” as Frances Soda describes it. Fortunately there’s EFT, Emotional Freedom Techniques, a system of tapping on acupuncture points to rebalance the body’s energies.

The guided EFT exercises Frances will present can be used to release overwhelm, negative feelings and limiting beliefs. With a more serious investment of time and a little detective work, she can help get to the core of deep seated problems and work toward reprogramming outmoded beliefs and subconscious self-sabotage.

Looking for a more balanced life affirming existence, Josie Burns courageously abandoned corporate life to follow her dream. Now she’s thriving in her new career as a certified yoga instructor working with individuals of all ages and levels of yoga expertise. Explains Josie, “Even if we just sit calmly and breathe deeply we are practicing yoga”. Now that’s my kind of exercise! The mind body fusion of practicing Yoga revitalizes the body increases joint flexibility, and promotes inner calmness and peace.

Women working together to empower women! Let’s hear it for the girls!

Why is it so important you attend this event?

You will walk away having laughed, and lunched, and learned, feeling united, empowered, comfortable in your own body and better able to meet life’s challenges.

Come join them. You deserve to be there!

Don't Miss Windsor's Stilt Guys On Dragons' Den October 24, 2012

STILT GUYS ON DRAGONS DEN OCTOBER 24, 2012

EVERY STEP IS AN ADVENTURE!

The Stilt Guys (Mark Lefebvre and Kyle Sipkens) can say that they walked tall onto the popular CBC television series “Dragons Den”. What they can’t talk about is whether or not they cut a deal with any of the show’s five successful entrepreneurs.
“We signed a non-disclosure agreement prohibiting us from revealing the outcome of our pitch. Not even my mom knows what went down!” explains Lefebvre who then goes on to leak tidbits about the experience of appearing on Canada’s most watched non-scripted series. “We had a blast! They fired incredibly good questions at us and we gave it our best shot. Their camera phones were out from the moment we entered and the studio was electric.”

“The producers told us we were very relaxed and well prepared,” adds Sipkens “We spent close to an hour in the studio with the dragons so for us it was the best business consultation ever!”
When asked about Kevin O’Leary the supposed ‘tough guy’ on the panel Kyle’s response is typical of the Stilt Guys’ brand of cheeky humour. “He’s REALLY short!” Additionally “We brought a few surprises and something for Kevin in particular, but we wanted to have fun with him and not be insulting. You’ll just have to tune in to see what the big man gets ‘up’ to.”
Speaking of tuning in - a viewing party has been scheduled for Wednesday, October 24 starting at 7pm at the Walkerville Brewery, 525 Argyle Road courtesy of WEtech Alliance. Vice-president Yvonne Pilon welcomes media, friends and the entrepreneurial community to “Come out and enjoy the show, meet the new Stilt Guys, and hear about future plans as they get set to celebrate their 10th season in 2013.”

"National Vet Tech Week" October 14 to 20, 2012

I received this from Amanda Garant, R.V.T. and owner of Amanda's Pet Sitting Services http://amandaspetsitting.vpweb.ca  and wanted to pass it on ..

Amanda's Pet Sitting is a 2012 Biz X award nominee and it is her dedication to the industry that earns her this honour..

Read up on what is going on during the week of Oct. 14 to 20 and hopefully you can support her efforts!

In Amanda's words, "Registered Veterinary Technicians play such an important role in the health and well being of all our furry friends. They assist veterinarians in surgery rooms, they are the staff behind the scenes in vet clinics who take care of x-rays and blood work, some work at medical laboratories, on farms, for the pharmaceutical pet divisions, as teachers, groomers or, like myself, as a professional pet sitter and dog walker. We posses skills from hospital management to animal nursing and are the voice of the animals we help. All RVT's have had to pass a provincial exam and belong to a professional association called the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians ( OAVT). To keep our status we must complete 'continuing education' similar to most other medical professions. This year National Vet Tech Week is from October 14 -20. During this week, RVT's are encouraged to celebrate by educating the public on the roles we play in the workforce and to volunteer our time where we can. I decided to do both! I have shed light on the amazing RVT's out there AND I will be volunteering at the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society.  If you know of any RVT's working hard in your community, make sure you give them a smile and say thank you for their compassion and devotion."

For more information about RVT's or the OAVT please visit http://www.oavt.org/
